Welcome to the 2023 Dragon Run Website!
This site should provide you with answers to all of your questions about this year's Dragon Run. Still have questions? Ask by clicking on "Contact Us" in the menu bar.
What is the Dragon Run?
The Dragon Run is the race for all members of the Boy's & Girl's Dragon Running Clubs at each of the Elementary Schools in the Gretna School District. The Dragon Running Clubs meet in the weeks leading up to the race. (Note that this event is different than the PTO fundraising runs sponsored individually at each school.)
When is the Dragon Run?
Saturday, April 22nd, 2023. Race begins at 8:30 am, but see the schedule of events below.
Location
NEW LOCATION! This year's race will start and finish at Gretna High School, 11335 S 204th Street. The race starts on the south driveway at GHS (between Gretna High School and Gretna United Methodist Church) and finishes in the Gretna High School Stadium. See the course map page for the route.
Where to Park
Park at Gretna High School in the lots on both the east & west side. Feel free to use the faculty lot on the north end. Do NOT use the south driveway between GHS and Gretna United Methodist Church. That is the starting area and will be closed. Be careful for pedestrians as you park!
Schedule of Events
7:45 am - Volunteer Meeting
8:15 am - Find your place in the starting chute
8:20 am - Final Race Instructions
8:25 am - Presentation of Colors & National Anthem
8:30 am - Race Begins!
Finish is on the track at the GHS stadium (runners will enter from the south driveway off of Brentwood Drive). Parents may cheer from the west (home) stadium.
Runner's Bib
Each runner will receive a race bib to wear during the race. They will receive this from their coaches at school the week before the race. Please have them wear it on the front of their outer clothing so that everyone knows they are an official Dragon Runner! Although we aren't tracking individual times, we hope this is a memorable keepsake of when they ran the Dragon Run! Note: The tag on the bottom of the bib can be used to get a free donut & drink at the west (home) GHS Concession stand.
Finish Line
For the safety of the runners, stay out of the finisher's lane and finish chute. As the runner's finish they will be given a finishers medal and a bottle of water. They will keep moving through the chute to the exit. NO NON-RUNNING PARENTS/GUARDIANS ALLOWED IN THE FINISHER'S CHUTE. There isn't room! There will be an exit at the back of the finish area to meet up.
Course Support
We will have a lead biker that will guide runners throughout the course, as well as course monitors at intersections. We will also have assistance from the Sarpy County Sheriff's office.
Encouragement!
Make sure to encourage not only your runner, but all runners! Posterboard signs with their names or positive, encouraging statements are a tradition at road races, along with the runner's favorite: the COWBELL! Ring them loud and proud as the runners go by to encourage them!
Photo Op!
We will have a photo backdrop for the Dragon Run located in the stadium. Be sure to get your runner's photo taken with their medal and memories!
Inclement Weather - New Policy for 2023!
In the event of inclement weather, the school district has the final say as to whether we run or not. To reduce the chances of a cancelation based on a questionable forecast, the call to run the race will be made AT race time. We will still gather together at Gretna High School, and if conditions at race time are not favorable for the race, we will gather everyone in the High School gym for refreshments, a quick pep talk, then a victory lap and medal presentation for each school. This will ensure that the season ends on the best note possible.
